Can Quercetin prevent coronavirus?

How Quercetin Inhibits Viral Infections?

Among the many properties of quercetin, the most well-studied is its antiviral ability, which is mainly due to three mechanisms of action:
A U.S. Department of Defense-funded study, published in 2007, found that quercetin may reduce the risk of viral illness during times of extreme physical stress (extreme physical stress may impair immune function, making more susceptible to infection).
Cyclists received a daily dose of 1000 mg of quercetin, combined with vitamin C (to increase plasma quercetin levels) and niacin (to improve absorption), for five weeks, on three consecutive days of cycling for three hours a day. Compared to untreated group, the likelihood of contracting a viral disease was significantly lower. Forty-five percent of people in the untreated group got sick, compared with 5% of those in the treatment group.
Another study funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), published in 2008, used a highly pathogenic H1N1 influenza virus to challenge animals treated with quercetin. The results were the same, with significantly lower morbidity in the treatment group than in the untreated group.

Quercetin can effectively prevent coronavirus

Other studies have also confirmed that quercetin is effective against a variety of viruses. These include:

  1. A 1985 study found that quercetin inhibits the infectivity and replication of herpes simplex virus type 1, poliovirus type 1, parainfluenza virus type 3, and respiratory syncytial virus.
  2. A 2010 animal study found that quercetin inhibits both influenza A and B viruses. There were also two major discoveries. First, these viruses were unable to develop resistance to quercetin, and second, the effect was significantly enhanced when combined with antiviral drugs (amantadine or oseltamivir), preventing the development of resistance.
  3. Another study in 2016 found that quercetin regulates protein expression and has a protective effect against influenza A (H1N1) virus. Specifically, regulation of heat shock proteins, fibronectin 1, and arrestin helps reduce viral replication.
  4. Another study published in 2016 found that quercetin inhibits several influenza viruses, including H1N1, H3N2 and H5N1. According to the authors, “This study demonstrates that quercetin exhibits inhibitory activity early in influenza infection, providing a therapeutic option for the future development of effective, safe, and affordable natural products for the treatment and prevention of [influenza A virus] infection.
  5. In 2014, researchers noted that quercetin appears to “be useful in the treatment of common colds caused by rhinoviruses,” adding, “It has been shown that quercetin reduces viral internalization and replication in vitro and decreases in vivo. Viral load, lung inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. Quercetin also reduces oxidative damage, thereby reducing the risk of secondary bacterial infections, which are a major cause of flu-related deaths. Importantly, quercetin increased mitochondrial biosynthesis in skeletal muscle, suggesting that part of its antiviral effect is due to enhanced mitochondrial antiviral signaling.
  6. A 2016 animal study found that quercetin inhibits infection of mice with dengue and hepatitis viruses. Other studies have confirmed that quercetin inhibits hepatitis B and C infection.

A recent study published in the March 2020 issue of the journal Microbial Pathogenesis found that quercetin “provides comprehensive protection against S. pneumoniae infection,” both in vivo and in vitro, by the main mechanism of Neutralizes pneumolysin (PLY for short), a toxin released by pneumococci that can predispose to S. pneumoniae infection.
